The show centres not around Jesus but his betrayer, Judas. The whole story is taken from Judas' point of view. It gives the audience the feeling of loving Jesus with all their hearts, followed by the the experience of betraying him. We can imagine the inner battle Judas is experiencing as we all doubt and ask difficult questions. I believe that the reason that the character of Judas is my favourite and probably the majority of peoples favourite is that we see a little of ourselves in him. We love Jesus, but do we love Him enough to stay when his teachings contradict our behaviours or when following Him is harder than we expected? Possibly my favourite line in the show is sung by Jesus when he says “God, Thy Will be done, Take Your only Son”. How great is the love of God for us that he did something no-one expected in order for us to be forgiven.
Another key “character” is Mary Magdalene. To me, the relationship between her and Jesus is beautiful and about completely turning over a new leaf. It shows the confused longing of a women who never learnt any way to relate to men other than in a sexual way. Wouldn't many women perceived by society in the manner she was experience the same confusion? I am sure I would. In the arena tour, Mary removes her make-up. She is finally content to be herself and be loved for who she is. This touches me and highlights the impact of Jesus, then and now. He changes us with his unconditional love and forgiveness, no matter what we have done in the past.
I love that the show leaves the audience with thought provoking questions for example, why Jesus came to earth when he did and who was Jesus? True, the answers are not provided, but the right questions are asked. If you think about it, it is actually similar to the way Jesus taught in parables, he asked thought provoking questions, often without providing clear answers. In Jesus Christ Superstar, we are provided with questions and allowed to come to our own decisions.
The music is catchy, dramatic, passionate and spiritually uplifting. In my opinion, this is a fantastic way to discuss the life of Christ. The modern setting highlights to me and the audience, the continued relevance of Jesus in our lives. In my life I have felt and experienced too much to ever not believe in him. I feel privileged to be a part of the show that creatively performs the story that I have based my life and my actions on and I can't wait to show this passion to our audience.
